The Danevirke Museum is pleased about your attendance! Once upon a time the Danewerk secured the southern border of the Danish Kingdom. The first defenses were established around 650. Until around the year 1200 altogether 30 km of barriers were put up. Today the Danewerk is the biggest archaeological ground monument in Northern Europe. A part of this, the wall "Waldemarsmauer" (lower left picture) from the 12th century, is also the oldest brick wall in Northen Europe. It is located right next to the Danewerkmuseum. The archaeological park Danewerk comprises the wall, the "Waldemarsmauer", the castle barrier "Thyraburg" and the redoubt 14 (lower right picture) dating back to the year 1864. Latest news: For their two cultural viking sites Danewerk and Haithabu Schleswig-Holstein will request recognition as Unesco World Inheritance Site. The request to the UNESCO will be placed at an international level simultaneously with Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Latvia. |
